I wasn't sure what to label this so I hovered on the safe side. It's kind of ambiguous. I'm just a bit confused right now.
Decay
it happens slowly at first
unnoticed
through the noise the cogs in the clocks are making
and everything on top of that
hurry, hurry,
but only a rat can win a rat race
then something falls off
a pencil
off a desk or a smile
and that was what it was
a smile, plummeting to the floor
along with scrunched-up paper
when it falls, so does a cheerful oblivion
that has cloaked you for however long.
a week, a month, a decade
a decade of decay
of which you are now
all too aware of
and now the pace moves the same but everything happens so much faster
tooth follows tooth
you begin to leave parts of yourself everywhere -
half-full mugs litter the floor
where you fell asleep before you could finish
your hot chocolate
as the rollercoaster speeds up
you tear open your chest with trembling hands
so you can't scream. you can't see an end in sight
but what goes down must rise again?
even if it means drifting above a bridge
waiting for the bloated bodies to float back up. they always do.
submerged,
fully clothed and six feet underwater
you realise with a dim sense of loss
that you don't speak in your dreams any more
maybe if you did you would speak french, or italian,
or some other half-forgotten language
