I want to learn to play the Guitar

I have had a guitar in my room for over a year and I really want to learn how to play it but not really keen on lessons as I can't afford it, so I'm hoping on self teaching which I am quite good at once I have the right info. At present it is only classical guitar but may change strings to acoustic once I'm used to it. So I am complete beginner I've never learnt any instrument but would love to do this. Can any of you guys recommend any books or videos etc? I can consider lessons but not right now. Any recommendations?

Thanks guys, take care of yourselves.

They way i did it was to learn some basic chords then look up songs i liked and go from there, each song has new chords so you learn more.

I recommend this site:

http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/

It has tabs for pretty much every song I've wanted to learn and it says next to them whether they're novice/intermediate etc
It also has some Bass Tabs
It's a cool site :)

I have a guitar that I can't really play, and I've always wanted to play bass.
Wanna trade?

Same. I just learned song by song. I found it more engaging that way.

Learning some chords and a few basic songs by yourself is a good way to start, but getting lessons would be ideal. My only advice is that if you do ever decide to get lessons, steer clear of teachers who start off by asking "Okay, what songs would you like to learn?" A good teacher will teach you techniques and will pick songs ideal for practicing them, whether you particularly like the songs or not (my teacher mostly taught me blues and folk songs, but the techniques used in those songs laid the groundwork for learning other styles and genres by myself), and having someone who can encourage you when you're doing well and correct you when you're doing badly works wonders.

I know this isn't very helpful since you don't want lessons at the moment, and it isn't strictly gospel because a lot of people do get by and learn to play very well by themselves, but it's the only advice I have, other than to be patient, practice diligently and never give up. :)

indeed, a good teacher will start with scales and chords first and wont even bother with other peoples songs until you know them first

There's lots of stuff online to teach you the basics chords, scales and things. Then you can just build on what you know by looking up more stuff online and learning more chords then songs and stuff.

Definitely don't change to steel strings, the body won't have enough reinforcement to deal with the increased tension required to keep steel strings in tune. I pretty much learnt by choosing songs and looking up the chords for them, then googling the chords and learning how to play them. I've never had lessons that I've actually attended properly since they never taught me what I wanted to learn. As long as your keep practicing every day being self taught isn't that bad.
good luck :)
