The key watching the TdF is keying in on the scenery. You get to see the countryside, rivers, castles, towns, bridges etc. Its not like world cup where guys pass the ball back and forth for 15 minutes on the same spot of grass. I learned a lot about the look of Leeds, York, Sheffield etc. TdF counts a bit as my summer holiday lol

When my nan rang my mum the other day she was talking about how lovely the scenery was when she had been watching it on tv. So lovely that she took photos of it! But whats really facepalm is that she decided to close all the curtains and use the flash on her camera! So now shes going to have 10 pictures of her camera flash. Bless her haha.x

There are times to stay put, and what you want will come to you.
But there are times to go out into the world and find such a thing for yourself.
I aint no abacus but you can count on me.

I've driven around some of the areas they went (actually Holme Moss sticks in my mind as the road where my mum told me she never wants to hear of me going up because of it being steep, winding and high) and the scenery is amazing especially when it isn't foggy. I actually drove through parts of Sheffield a few days before and suddenly they were finishing off all the road works that had needed to be done for ages!
My cousin, uncle and 2nd cousin went to see both the 1st stage and then came down and stayed at my aunties in Sheffield to see the 2nd stage. My 2nd cousin is about 10 and he beats his dad and granddad at cycling (and they're keen cyclists) hands down any day of the week; he's actually in an adult cycling club and it's very rare that he isn't at the front or first and that has been the case for the last couple of yrs. On things with children his own age they actually set him off hours later with his dad to give the other people a chance. I think they were planning cycling up holme moss to see them.
I didn't go but saw bits on the tele and the crowds through Yorkshire were mental; it's hard to believe holme moss is just a road between farm land when seeing that and also people did have difficulty getting up there in the morning.
Also, just want to say Yorkshire Air Ambulance did an ACE job. Recruited an extra helicopter for the latter end of last week and over the weekend for the extra crowds, difficulty to get to areas due to closed roads and people cycling more, especially on the more dangerous rural bypasses (luckily it was on loan to them for free as they are a charity with no gov't funding apart from Yorks Ambo Service seconding paramedics out to them). They were busy but coped with it exceptionally well despite other problems. Hopefully no one who used their services was too badly injured.
And yep, though same of England is flat, a lot of areas are far from it and the aptly named Peak District, that it swept just into, is one of them.

Wow what a stage they had today. Between the cobblestones and the rain riders fell constantly. I never saw a stage like that. Sorry to see Chris Froome drop out . He's been hitting the pavement every day. Wonder what sort of wheels he was using.

ever thought of going to take in the scenery when it isn't packed with people? Sounds like a sheepish thing to do with a crowd.
