No, it's not true. You should never remove your stitches yourself for several reasons, the main one being that if the wound isn't sufficiently healed enough the stitches need to stay in. The vast majority of people haven't been trained in how to asses their wound like a nurse or doctor have been, and they could end up taking the stitches out when they actually need to stay in.
