^^ I don't see it as rude to tell someone that you didn't like a present/would prefer not to recieve something. Yes it can be awkward, but it helps you learn to buy things they really appreciate. For example one year I got nothing but sponge bob stuff from EVERYONE, so I just politely asked people to not buy me it again.
