It is! There also seems to be a lot of such stories taking place locally. I'm near NY City but these aren't city kids even though the connections are easier to make.
Another girl - 12 years old and living in a forgotten area of Hudson Valley - taught herself ukulele and wrote songs. She won a Simon Cowell TV talent show, and last summer she was performing at Madison Square Garden with Imaging Dragons (she's all of 14 now). Her friends at school didn't even know she sang. Her mum took her to a coffee shop (I could walk to it right now) to get her used to singing in public. Even now that she's famous she does surprise appearances at the coffee shop. She's a really nice kid.
