Any fellow Whovians here?

Hey guys :')
I was wondering if there were any Doctor Who fans here? I would love to make some new friends. :D

not_so_insig 26-12-2013 02:51 PM

I like Doctor Who. I own both the new and classic Doctor Who! In fact my favourite classic Doctor Who is from the Troughton era.

Hello fellow Whovian!
I only started watching from series 7 with Matt Smith as the Doctor but I am hooked and I really want to watch more.
I absolutely loved last nights Christmas episode!

Amaryllis 26-12-2013 04:12 PM

I like Doctor Who, but I am a season behind and at this point I am just watching it out of spite.

Can someone explain what a Whovian is?

A Whovian is someone who is basically a fan of Doctor Who

In that case, I am one of them!

I would say a Whovian is someone who is a fanatic. There is a big difference between those who simply watch the programme and enjoy it, and those who are huge fans and try to decipher the (not so) hidden clues throughout the series and theorise on the plot. In my opinion, Whovians should also have at least some knowledge (if not have seen) the classic series so that there is some context and background to the universe of The Doctor.

I enjoy the programme, although I think (and it pains me to say it) that the writing has gone drastically downhill since Stephen Moffat took over as head writer. I think he's putting his efforts more into Sherlock. He was great at writing stand-alone episodes, but he ruined one of the best monsters (Weeping Angels) and the story arcs are now far too convoluted.

Definitely a whovian *nods*

I got the 50th Anniversary Annual and another book (I forget which one, and i cant find it atm) for Christmas! Anyone else get any DVDs or other merchandise?

sherlock holmes 26-12-2013 06:06 PM

Used to be a big doctor who fan, but wasn't a fan of the christmas episode and the last series was quite poor really.

The War Doctor 26-12-2013 06:14 PM

I haven't watched the most recent season because I had gotten rather tired of Moffat's run as showrunner. I really liked his episodes from the Davies era (especially Blink), but the constant self-congratulatory in-jokes and catchphrases were wearing a bit thin for me, as was the show-dominating black hole that was River Song. However, I did watch the 50th anniversary special and the Christmas episode, and I enjoyed both. I've always felt that Matt Smith was the weakest of the new Doctors; he does the silly, childish stuff very well, but he just can't achieve the intensity or intimidation that Eccleston and Tennant were capable of. But I did like him, and I thought last night's episode was a fitting send-off for him. He did very well. And I'm really excited to see what Peter Capaldi can do with the role.

The One Who 26-12-2013 06:22 PM

^ I was hoping for a slightly more serious Doctor, but I'm not sure if Capaldi will play it like that.

The War Doctor 26-12-2013 06:24 PM

According to Moffat (I think... one of the Doctor Who higher-ups anyway), Capaldi will be a more intense, serious Doctor. Though I can see how it's hard to see that from his 30-second debut last night. We'll just have to wait and see.

Amaryllis 26-12-2013 06:29 PM

I hope that Moffat's end comes soon. We can give him a good send off.

Right into the sun.

not_so_insig 26-12-2013 06:31 PM

Yes I agree with the comments about the Moffat episodes - I prefer the earlier new series Doctor Who. I quite enjoyed Matt Smith however though.

Serious would be great, but maybe not intense. It is meant to be a light, family show after all! Going by his previous roles I think he will either be great or will flop.

not_so_insig 26-12-2013 06:40 PM

Does anyone like (or even watched) the classic Doctor Who? I own several of the DVDs (I own at least one of each Doctor).

Also if anyone has watched the Trial of the Timelord, you will know there's another timelord regeneration which has largely been forgotten about by the new series.

The War Doctor 26-12-2013 06:44 PM

I've seen quite a bit of the Hartnell era, Genesis of The Daleks from the Tom Baker era, and the Doctor Who movie starring Paul McGann. I've also listened to a lot of audio dramas starring the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth Doctors (all played by their respective TV actors).

Feel_Good_inc. 29-12-2013 01:06 AM

You're a whovian!

We're now best friends.

Did you know, if you watched every Doctor Who episode, from Hartnell to Smith, it would take a solid three months.
That's how long it's taken me, minus time for sleep and eating.
Head over to Daily Motion, look for users GreenDude33 and TardisMedia. Between them, they have all the classic episodes.

BTW Tom Baker FTW!
