How do you dispose of your self-harm waste?

How do you get rid of your blood-stained tissues, plasters, bandages, old blades, empty packets of medication which you've OD'ed on, ect without people knowing/seeing?

I mean I have a locked box full of self-harm waste, it's not like I can just put it in the bin/trash can or other people will see, so I was wondering how do y'all get rid of your self-harm waste?

chickenpie 18-03-2010 06:18 PM

I used to put it in a carrier bag in my room, then come bin day I'd tie it up and put it out with the rubbish.

however I have been told that it needs to be disposed of properly, Meds/packets I take to my pharmacy and they incinerate them, and I have been just throwing other stuff into the bin but I know I shouldn't, but don't know what to do with it.

If/when I go to the hospital after SIing, the nurses always ask if I've disposed of the tool properly, and I always say yes, but have I?

I bin it all... bedroom bin then black binbag with other general waste and put it in the big outside bins because I know those big bins get emptied with the truck and nobody lifts the individual bags out. Got told to dispose of any broken glass/plates etc like that so I assumed that was the best bet. Probably not the best idea but don't know what else I could do.

mikey 18-03-2010 09:56 PM

This sort of stuff should be disposed of properties (ie blades into a 'sharps' box, blood-stained stuff into medical waste to be incinerated etc).
However, in reality...?
When I lived at home, I used to put it into empty crisp packets/cans and then in a carrier bag, straight into the green bin outside. No chance of anyone finding anything. I went through a phase of making myself sick into plastic bags, and that went straight into the big outside bin too.

I throw it in the bin.. i have my own bin which i empty/change so no one else sees it, plus its in the corner where no one but me really goes, so i just throw it all away there, and like just cover it with other stuff.

tamobhuuta 18-03-2010 10:13 PM

sanitary bins work, but i suppose that's only helpful if you're somewhere that has one. apart from that, i just bin it as normal as i 'go along'

I've really never put any thought into the proper disposal of my ****...
I mean I always just chuck it in my bin and then it goes in the big bin for trash day.
Not they I've ever really gotten rid of any of my razors, just a lot of bloody gooey messy dressings and tissues and what not.

Fry 20-03-2010 04:04 AM

until i moved out recently i was keeping it all in two shoe boxes because otherwise i would have been found out and couldn't be bothered with it. i chucked it away with the rest of my rubbish as soon as i could.

Rhuben 20-03-2010 04:19 AM

Usually just put it in the bottom of a plastic carrier bag then put other rubbish on top to hide it, tie it up then throw it in the main bin.

lozza 20-03-2010 05:30 AM

but it in a few paper bags... hide it in my room and when I go out... mostly to work I just dump it in one of the bins at the shopping centre...

xxemolollypopxx 20-03-2010 06:44 AM

burn it, in a safe place if you throw it in the trash than someone can find it and use it in a crime it is unlikely but able to do or with the blades use cleaning acahol(sp?) and than in the trash on trash day at your home bring the stuff in a bag and put it in another persons trash bin so your parents dont find it (but you need to stop cutting but i should not talk because i still do)

akita 20-03-2010 07:18 AM

The day I stopped cutting I went to my gp and gave him my blade and he put it into the sharps container on his desk.

flawedinsomniac 20-03-2010 07:36 AM

It's gross, but I used to keep the bloody tissues and whatnot in a box, but I actually got rid of ALL of that sort of stuff the other day. I just bagged it all up into a trash bag and put it out for the trash that morning.

As for tools themselves....well, I've never disposed of tools before. Even if I stop using a certain tool, I don't get rid of it. I just put it somewhere else so it doesn't get mixed up with the others.

I don't have a hard time disposing of stuff, though. I just put it in a trash bag and set it out on the boulevard for trash pick-up.

mollysaysrecover 20-03-2010 12:30 PM

i keep my suicide notes and bloody tissues in a bag that i keep in a box underneath my bed.. it's disgusting but i really have no other place to put it. Occasionally i flush the tissues down the toilet, but only if it's suitable tissue paper. I can't trash it because there is a fox that keeps coming and ripping open our trash, so i'm nearly positive that someone would find out. I OD on my medicine i already take, so mom just thinks i've finished the bottle and goes to the chemist to get another.

what_the? 20-03-2010 01:03 PM

I have a sharps bin anyway, so blades go in there, stuff for cleaning up goes in a bin bag hidden in the back of my wardrobe.

The Fantastical 20-03-2010 04:22 PM

I don't throw away any blades. Used dressings tend to go in bins in public toilets, tissue gets flushed normally. Sometimes I throw stuff out in our bin, but only if there is absolutely no chance of it being spotted.

l'il esky 20-03-2010 10:06 PM

i have a sharps bin too ( there are bonus' to working in the nhs, i use them for home visits, so always have one) i used to have a lockable box that i kept my blades in so i never disposed on them. please be careful with what you are doing with blades/sharps as the bin men are at risk. i got a needle stick injury through work last year and its horrid not knowing what you might have caught and waiting for blood tests etc.....

when i lived at home i always used toilet tissue to stop any bleeding and would flush that down the toilet

xlaurenx 21-03-2010 12:45 AM

I never throw my blades away yet bloody tissues i put them in a plastic bag and throw them in a normaly bing for pill packets i throw them in a normal bin aswell. Just i do it when everyone is out.

I wrap my old blades in electrical tape and throw them out. There is no way the blades can cut through a few layers of rubber.

makedamnsure 21-03-2010 03:19 PM

tissue paper can go down the toilet. Plasters/bandages etc I put in a crisp packet or something, then a plastic bag and then in either the outside bin, or I take it the local tip, put it in a public bin, whatever.

I've never really had to get rid of blades as such but i guess wrapping them in something, sellotape? and then paper and a bag would be safe enough.
