Christian group books anti-gay ads to appear on buses
https://apps.facebook.com/theguardia...-gay-ads-buses
Playing on the words of the Stonewall ad 'Some people are gay. Get over it', this Christian group tried to put their own message on 5 different bus routes of London. Boris Johnson stopped it. |
Well done to Boris for stopping it, he can do something right by sounds of it.
Gay Pride! |
Yay - so it's not going ahead any more? Oh good :) xx
|
Thats pretty awful. Glad it got stopped
|
meh. freedom of speech n'at
|
Wow, that's horrendous. People really do need to stop spitting so much venomous hate. The hypocrisy is unreal.

After reading a bit more about this, it has just consolidated my opinion. The group got their advert cleared by the Advertising Standards Authority (yes, they are a pointless organisation, but they exist for a reason) and the bus company had approved it. Do politicians really have the authority to censor whatever they (don't) like?

What Claire said.

Don't see why it was stopped...

I got offended both because of my sexuality and because I'm a christian. I don't agree that you can have therapy that will change your sexuality, like it's some kind of mental illness. It shows Christians in such an ignorant light too.
It just irks me. |
Torn on this. Will come back to it when head is on a bit straighter.

I agree with freedom of speech but what upset me is that the Christian charity clearly used the design of the Stonewall poster intended to tackle homophobia.
It was a tasteless tactic and I don't think I would have been as offended had they designed their own poster and used different words. I'm honestly shocked they really didn't see that this would cause so much upset! I have been a Christian and involved in churches all my life and I find it difficult to comprehend how a Christian charity thought it a good idea to commandeer a anti-homophobic poster to promote a therapy that The British Medical Association have said to be 'discredited and harmful to those 'treated'' and The Royal College of Psychiatrists have warned to creating 'a setting in which prejudice and discrimination flourish'. In addition, Professor Michael King, director of mental health sciences at University College London, has said stated that this 'bus promotion' 'underscore the stigma against gay and lesbian people that, somehow, they're ill and need to be healed'. He went on to say that 'the NHS would never pay for a treatment with this grade of evidence. It's just poor.' ( http://www.nydailynews.com/life-styl...icle-1.1060226 ) Basically, yes people have freedom of speech, but I believe it should be tasteful and far from prejudice. Most of the Christians I know believe in a loving God and that it's our job to reflect that love. To me these posters do not reflect love at all. That is all. |
for all the people who think this ad was ok and not inciting hatrid, how about,
Not Black, ex black, post black, and proud, get over it! and then having therapy to exterminate black culture, black skin black everything, with therapy. Would it be acceptable then? or maybe change it to islam? homophobia is based on the exact same principles as racism and islamophobia. How about, ex-islam or exiled islam? It's your choice. |
Or, how about having therapy for those who may be struggling with their sexuality, to help them figure it for themselves? Since a lot of young gay people do struggle with it (and possibly with perceived societal reactions), I don't see a problem with offering people someone to talk to. Obviously this group have one opinion and I'm not suggesting that they offer the therapy/counselling, but having more facilities generally couldn't be a bad thing.
I live in an area where sectarian walks (of the Orange variety) are commonplace. They are almost a community event. A lot of people find them offensive, but if people want to walk around the streets proclaiming Protestant victory over Catholics in a battle several hundred years ago, then good for them. |

I still don't really see the problem with the adverts. If a gay person doesn't want to be gay and wants to try some sort of therapy, then why not? |
