I don't know if I can

I start voluntary work tomorrow. 6 hours a day for one day a week. I've not worked for 2 and a half years. I don't know if I can do it. Help.

EyelinerAndCigarettes 17-06-2019 10:13 PM

Terrifying I'm suree, but a really something to be proud proud of.

Why don't you think you can do it? If it's the long hours (6 hours is al ong time!) could you cut it down?

Stellata 17-06-2019 10:15 PM

Thanks. :)

That's how long the day is, I can't shorten it sadly.

You can do it!

Try not to go in with any pre-conceptions of what it will be like or reasons for why you won't be able to do it. I know that's much easier said than done though.

Remember how pleased you were when you were offered the job? And they got back to you much quicker than they originally said, didn't they? Remember those things because it means that this is something you really want to do and also that other people (as well as everyone here) believe in you too.

What sort of breaks do you get? If you've got a nice long lunch hour could you go somewhere nice and relaxing or treat yourself to a special lunch out? That might help ease the anxiety/break up the day?

It's very understandable and normal to feel anxious and hopefully that anxiety will alleviate in time. It's okay to set boundaries when you need to and to look at yourself physically and mentally - if you need a rest or some time out, take one.

Good luck, I hope you have fun. You've got this!

Thank you both so much.

I have no idea about breaks etc, or even exactly what time I finish today.

Thank you for believing in me.

Good luck, you are amazing. I hope today goes well and you can gradually build up your confidence and comfort.

nonperson 18-06-2019 06:01 PM

How did it go today?

Stellata 18-06-2019 07:34 PM

Thank you both.

It went pretty well. I did some data entry and printing. She let me finish early today, so that's good. I have to do a DBS check though and that is stressing me as I don't have much documentation.

Auror. 18-06-2019 10:33 PM

I'm glad you survived! 6 hours is a long day for anyone, so well done! Do you think you'll go back and/or follow through with the DBS check?

Stellata 19-06-2019 09:13 AM

It wasn't 6 hours yesterday, it was 4... but enough for the first day.

I'm definitely going back and following through. I just hope what I have will be enough.

Thanks. :)

one_step_closer 19-06-2019 03:09 PM

Well done. That is a huge achievement. :-)

If you don't have what is needed for the DBS check will you be able to get additional stuff somehow?

Stellata 19-06-2019 06:59 PM

Thanks Lindsay.

I've got some stuff. Apparently they can ask for fingerprinting if there's not enough.. ah well.

Auror. 06-07-2019 12:37 AM

Did everything come back? Have you gone back for another shift? Thinking of you.

Stellata 06-07-2019 06:57 AM

Thanks. :)

I've done 3 shifts there now. Still waiting on the DBS to be done, as they've been very busy, it hasn't even been sent off yet.

Auror. 06-07-2019 07:00 PM

Has it gotten any easier? Super well done, I hope you're proud of yourself!
