Sudden pain in ankle when theres been no injury?
Ok this is really strage to ask this but i have litrally just been sitting (crossed legged like you used to do at school admittadly) on my bed and have got up to go and do somwthing constructive with my day and can not bare waight on my ankle because it is so painfull (I nearlly fell to the floor when i tried) I thought that it might have been becasue it had just "fell asleep" when i was sitting crossed leged to i tried twisting it aound a bit, rubbing it and even walking on it trying to ignor the pain but i just couldn't it sort of just gve way underneath me and moving it made me yelp out because of the pain. I have not injured it at all in any way for a good few years i think and as far as i can see there is no swelling or brusing to the ankle or foot. It has been about fifteen to twnety minuites now since i tried to walk and i have been moving it around despite the pain to mke sure it wasn't just a "dead leg" but there seemes to be very little improvment to it if any and now it is throbbing all the time even when it is still. I am very overweight and i know that can sometimes have an effect on your ankles but i thought that was more over a long period of time rather then sudden onset pain. Any idea what could be happening or how i can make it stop please?
UPDATE: i had a hot bath and that seemed to help the pain in my ankle while i was in there but when i tried to get out and put weight on it the pain was truly terrable and the pain seems to be getting worse. |
What kind of pain is it? Is it possible that you've overextended something by sitting on it funny?
Honestly, my best advice (as someone who frequently sprains her ankle) is to keep weight off it as much as possible, including not sitting on it directly. Rest it on a second chair or something while you're sitting down? Do you have ankle boots you can wear, for some extra support? Or an air cast/soft brace? Seeing a doctor is also probably a good idea if it doesn't go away in a day or so. |
Hay thanks for the reply! It was really painfull yesterday but not so bad today. A for the pain i suppose when i put weight on it it's a really sharp really intence pain that makes me yelp and then my foot gives way. Today mind you i can bare weight sort of partaly through it withough shouting about it and walk with a limp so i would say it was getting better. When i am sitting it just sort of throbs. I have sprained my ankle before and it sort of feels like that but as i said i haven't done anything that could result in it's injury. Oh well i guess it's just me and as it is getting better now i'm not so worried! Thanks for your reply though.

That's good to hear! I mentioned I sprain my ankles really easily; there was a point where like, pretty much every week I would have to hobble home at some point. Sometimes for no reason that I could see! :(
But yay. |
I'd say that if you haven't already then to follow RICE; Rest (though do move it every so often), Ice (put ice on your ankle (with a wet towel or similar between the ice and your skin) for up to 15mins every hour), Compression (put a bandage on it. A tubigrip would be great. With you saying you're overweight then a size E may be the right one if you're an adult as that's for large ankles. Definately wear one of these/ another ankle support when walking around but they should be taken off when you're asleep) and Elevation (sit with your foot up).
If there's nothing in the leaflet to say you can you could also try taking Ibuprofen to reduce any swelling (as there's likely to be some even if you can't see it) and that will also help with the pain. Take it at the dose that it says and always with food. If it's still painful with that then you can also add in paracetamol (again at the dose recommended and again, read the leaflet beforehand to ensure there is no reason why you can't take it). If it doesn't continue to improve over the next few days or it begins to worsen then you need to get it checked out by a doctor or, if you live in England you could go to a local Minor Injuries Unit (MIU). |
Thanks everyone. I sort of did what you said with the rice but only had wrist tubigrips and they would be really small on my ankle.
Good news it is absaloutly fine now with no pian at all so i'm feeling much better and less grumpy! Thanks for all your advice and taking the time to reply i know you are all busy! |
I've had something similar happen. Not from sitting just in general. I'll go to walk somewhere (like the kitchen or my room) and out of nowhere my ankle will hurt. Warm baths help to relax muscles so I would keep doing that if it's still helping. If it does it again just don't put too much pressure on it. This has only happened to me a tiny handful of times and each time I just don't put pressure on it until it goes away. It usually does in a bit of time. It's strange. I dunno why it happens.
