cracked breast bone
yesterday i went to the hospital with chest pai, and it turns out i have cracked my breast bone.
i wanted to knw if anyone else has done this, and what helps. i so wanted to ask how long ti will be before i can dance and sing again...singing hurts, i aint tried to dance yet. replys appriciated x |
Your sternum? I fractured mine last year.
It took it's time but it got better. |
indeed, i couldnt spell it, hence me not writing it lol

Has your doctor said how long it will be before you can do that stuff again? It takes several weeks for bones to heal. If the doctor you saw at the hospital didn't say, phone them and ask?
|
can i ask what exactly were you doing to crack your sternum? just interested, my friend did hers by falling down a flight of stairs. mand x

i was chasing aftera lad called fluffy (dont ask) at teh park, as he kept smaking my but and biting me, and i just tripped. my bone are prity prittle, no calcium in my diet so yehh

It can take 8-10 weeks especially with your weak bones (osteoporosis/ osteopaenia mean anything to you?) easily though it does depend on the damage done as it could be less than this, it could be more.
Once it has recovered you'd need to gradually increase the amount of exercise you do and it may be that you need physiotherapy. Definately can't start anything like dancing yet or for some weeks I'd have thought depending on the fracture type, even if only a hairline fracture as too much strain on it could cause damage. You can only get info like this from the hospital you went to as only they saw the injury and each fracture is different and even they may not know but they will have a greater idea than us so they are the only ones who can tell you this. It may help you to read this; Fracture/breaks article |
(And also, I know not related directly to this question, but, if you've not seen the doctor already regarding the pain you've been getting in your joints, it would be good idea not to dance anyway, regardless of your sternum, which should definitely be rested right now or it could lead to something which need surgery and could cause damage to other structures such as your ribs if worsens due to not getting adequate resting and therefore chance to repair.)

Animad, please scold me if this is inappropriate. This is just a thought....
If you have a medium to large bust, it might be helpful if you wore a bra all day and night. So the weight of your breasts won't put stress on your sternum and ribs as your breasts move as you move. |
MOST OF THIS POST IS POINTLESS KIM TALK!

The reason for this is that if the wrong pressure is on any fracture, even tiny, it can worsen this significantly possibly to the extent of shattering or displacing. Now the sternum where it is means it is hard to stabilise without surgery and it will alway be under pressure; if someone has got a fracture of their forearm and it is just a crack or a relatively simple case it can be put in a plaster cast for a period of time and the person will then be fine after. This puts pressure on it and stops movement. A fracture of the sternum, movement around this area cannot be stopped as muscles will always be pulling on it. A cast tight enough (even if possible in that location which it isn't) to hold a break in place would erm end up the patient unable to breathe. PERFECT conditions for the fracture in terms of being in the right place to heal so long as done correctly... shame it would never heal as you'd die of not being able to breathe FAR before any healing began! So because of this you do have to be more careful and so discuss it with your medical team. Any forces to your spine/ sternum/ neck/ ribcage could worsen it, even thongs you don't think of such as twisting so keeping really still and careful is the way and talking to your doctor about things like bra's because though it may help some, on others it could put pressure in the wrong spot. Presumably this is only a relatively mild crack that would heal, just be careful you don't make it worse or people like me might be rather happy as it means we can open you up and put a load of metal work inside you (no offence meant at all, I wouldn't want that happening, just saying fracture repair can be quite fun at times!) (Yes, I have been doing a lot of work about fractures and yes, me writing this was getting up a lot of info about it out of my head, most of which is irrelevant! But yeh, even mild fractures can turn nasty if not careful and then it could come down to an orthopaedic team + a drill + a box of metal bits and bobs (I won't go into what coz that's not needed even if each method to do the job is now annoyingly going round my head)!) |
thanks guys, im just trying to rest it, tis annoying the hell out of me tbh, cant bend dow without it hurting and i cant get up off teh floor either, *shakes head*
